How to Make Rick Simpson Oil Edibles

In this article, we will be going over the legendary Rick Simpson Oil (RSO or RSO oil)! I'm very excited to be writing about Rick Simpson Oil edibles and how amazing it is for healing. I'm a firm believer in using cannabis for your health. I'm constantly researching the medical benefits of cannabis, and the more I learn, the more I find the value in this plant.

Sadly, cannabis and cannabis users have been painted in a negative light. For example, movies such as Reefer Madness from the 1930s portrayed cannabis users as violent, lustful, and irresponsible.

Unfortunately, this type of propaganda has kept cannabis from really being able to be researched, and the full potential of medical cannabis has yet to be discovered.

The good news is that this is changing, and we see more states legalize cannabis for both medicinal and recreational use. I truly hope this trend continues and we can all benefit from cannabis.

So now on to the Rick Simpson Cannabis Oil.

What is Rick Simpson Oil?

This cannabis oil was made famous by Rick Simpson. Rick was diagnosed with skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma), and he decided not to use any treatments that were being offered from "modern medicine." The legend says that Rick treated his cancer solely with this cannabis oil. Over time Rick was healed of his cancer due to this amazing cure.

RSO oil is a high THC oil. The cannabis extract oil has a black color to it and is a very sticky oil. What is amazing is that Rick would make this oil and give it to people for free. Rick made the process of making RSO free and accessible to everyone. People used to call RSO Phoenix Tears.

Cannabis oils such as RSO are made with all the parts of the cannabis plant. For the How-To guide below, we’ll only be using the cannabis buds but you could use the shake and trim as well.

  • Trim is what a grower would trim off the cannabis plant.

  • Shake is what falls off the plant in your bag or jar as you handle cannabis over time.

How to make Rick Simpson Cannabis Oil

The first step in making this medicine is to get 100% Indica cannabis. Indicas are great for medicinal use since they can treat the following:

Let’s get into the RSO step-by-step guide.

I'll be using a sous vide for this process. A sous vide gives you precise control over the temperature settings so you won't risk ruining your cannabis.

Other methods for making RSO include:

  • Rice cookers

  • Hot plates

Caution:  Alcohol is highly flammable, so please don't use open flames. You may be tempted to do this on your stovetop, but we highly discourage this. If the alcohol ignites, it can cause fires and explosions.

Using a well-ventilated outdoor space is optimal.

Items required:

  • 1 oz. 100% Indica cannabis

  • Sous vide

  • Metal pot for decarbing

  • Everclear

  • Metal spoon

  • Filter bag

  • Syringe

Now let's get started!

The first step is to decarb (Decarboxylation) your cannabis. This process activates the psychoactive compounds in the herb.

To decarb follow the steps below.

Place your herb in a freezer bag. I like to double bag mine to make sure no water gets in.

Note: Be sure you use a freezer bag because they are meant for extreme temperatures.

Next, you have to submerge your cannabis, so it is fully covered by the water. To do this, seal the bag about 90 percent closed, so a small opening is still left in the bag.

Zip the bag closed and leave a small opening as shown above

Then put the bag into the water and let the water push the air out of the bag. keep pushing the bag deeper into the water and when your cannabis is fully submerged, seal off the bag.

Caution: Do not let the top of the bag sink into the water.

Note: You may have to weigh the bag down to keep it from floating to the top. I used some clamps and kitchen knives to keep my bag from floating.

Put your sous vide into the water.

Set your sous vide to 203 degrees farenheit and turn it on.

The cannabis needs to decarb for one hour at 203 degrees.

Now that our cannabis is decarbed we can go onto the next step.

Caution: Do not let your cannabis go over 240 degrees F

Place your decarbed cannabis in a container of your choosing. I’m using a kitchen pot.

Pour Everclear over your cannabis until it is fully covered.

Use a slotted spoon to crush your cannabis. Press the buds so they break apart.

Stir the mixture.

Your cannabis should break into smaller pieces but not be fully ground up. Be gentle when stirring. We want chunky plant material.

Get your filter bag ready.

Pour your mixture through the filter bag into another pot.

Squeeze out as much liquid as you can.

Your mixture should be a yellowish color. If it is deep green you grinded the cannabis too much.

Setup your sous vide outside. I’m using a large soup pot for this part. I put a piece of glassware on the bottom of the soup pot so my Rick Simpson Oil pot would not sink.

Set your sous vide for 211 degrees fahrenheit.

Keep an eye on your pot because the alcohol will boil off quickly. You can start to see the medicine taking shape on the right side of the pot.

Mine took about 30 minutes to boil down

Almost done!! So exciting!!

Ding! It’s ready.

Place the medicine into a syringe for dosing.

RSO Rick Simpson Oil Dosage Notes

Medical cannabis edibles need to be dosed very carefully. Consult with your medical professional before taking any kind of medical marijuana. This type of cannabis extract is made for oral ingestion. What this means is that there is a delay before you feel the effects of the oil. It takes some patients up to two hours to feel the dose.
